Shopify Home shows information about daily tasks, your store’s recent activity, and the next steps you can take to build your business.
As part of the Shopify Home team my role was to help redesign components of the Home experience. Specifically, the web/mobile experience, SMB and Plus (large merchants), merchant metrics, methods of gathering user input/feedback, recommender and card systems.
The work shown is designs, studies and analysis of how to make improvements to different features of Shopify Home.
Merchant card feed
10% of merchants determined the preferences of cards users saw in their feed, thus we required more signal/feedback from merchants. these are several design iterations on methods for gathering user feedback on which cards were useful and not useful so that we can improve our ability to serve the right cards at the right time.
New merchant visitor cards
When a new merchant opens their store they have few sales and little data. This makes it difficult for Shopify to serve relevant insightful and information. A card was designed along with data science team members to create a card to mimic a customer entering their store from where, how long and what products they were looking at. This card was well received and was one of the best performing cards we offered.
Banner celebrations
Merchants are busy and can often working during holidays or busy shopping seasons. We decided to give then a small slice of joy by offering special banners on special days and special achievements in their business.
Feed and card designs
The purpose of the Home page has changed over the years. It has many complex components to it. The features of Home were studied to determine the purpose of each, where problems were in order to design improvements.
Mio SLICE is wearable that provides all-day heart rate tracking and a PAI score - the most meaningful way to track all your activity using the mobile app, motivating you to stay healthy.
Mio SLICE and Pai app has received several accolades: Wall Street Journal Best of CES 2017, Women's Health Best New Health and Fitness 2017 and notable mentions by The Verge, Wearable.com.
Lead design on all mobile app (iOS and Android) product design. Collaborated with a large development studio and hardware company to execute on the product delivery. Other contributions included the SLICE device colourway (CMF), branding and logo design and packaging.
Ideation Process
Several months were spent research - evaluating the previous version of the app, evaluating user feedback, creating user journey maps, sketching different ideas and concepts. The most challenging problem to solve is creating an interface that made it easy for users to understand their complex health data easily.
Onboarding workflow
There was a massive collaborative effort to create the best user experience when a user first buys their health wearable and needs to install (and perhaps needs to update firmware). Many scenarios needed to be solved for such as, connecting to wearable via bluetooth, low battery, requires update, loss of signal mid connection.
Element AI is an artificial intelligence software company that helps enterprises operationalize AI. Element has several AI tools, applications and products that serve different industry verticals including insurance, banking, finance, retail and manufacturing.
Contributed to various projects and products across the Element AI including - Initiating early product design strategy for products, high-profile customer projects, investment decks, contribute to innovative AI research, manage, hire and grow the design team.
Here are two products I contributed product design strategy:
Document Intelligence
Automate field extraction from any document, boosting throughput and maximizing time spent on high-value tasks.
Collaborated with AI developers and scientists to research innovative solutions to improve document processing for clerks and end users.
Innovated work was done in order to determine the most optimum workflow to process documents quickly, correctly and accurately. AI models are only as good as the data it receives, as more quality data is available the models are able to begin moving from auto-fill to predicting outputs. Novel and dynamic user workflows needed to be considered for this product.
Trade Flow Scheduler (Dark themed screen)
Achieve lower implementation costs through recommended trade volumes that minimize market impact and price risk.
Collaborated with finance team to deliver trade flow scheduling product for one of the largest financial investment companies in the world. Provided product design strategy and visual design for this product.
Toolkit (AI Operations)
Orkestrator allows you to optimize the use of compute and storage resources, and bridge the gap between IT infrastructure and the needs of AI practitioners. Product design strategy was done for Toolkit which has an ensemble of tools that help AI practitioner run experiments, view the status of your jobs, build models and data label sets.
AI Generated Apparel Creator
An interactive application that allows a user to develop apparel concepts in concert with an AI model by exploring latent vectors (in multi-dimension latent space).
In collaboration with SSENSE ecommerce retailer, we were able to teach an AI model to generate almost infinite amounts of unique designs. When the project began the model would spit out thousands of images most were not good and a handful were nice but like a real creative process designs need to be iterated on (e.g., more blue, less patterns).
The theory was to design an application that allows the user/designer and AI to collaborate - allowing what the AI does best by generating almost infinite concepts in seconds and the user/designer to use their intuition on what looks nice, what styles work. The interactive application allows the designer to allow the AI and the designer have a back and forth workflow in order to get the best design concepts quickly.
We utilized the AI designs to produce bags and t-shirts and demonstrated our project and research at the NEURIPS (largest AI conference).
The Noon system enables you to coordinate all of the light switches in your home, enabling you to adjust the lighting to suit different activities or moods.
Noon was a client where we developed everything from the high-level wireframes of the user experience to the expanded custom icons that users could choose from for their different scenes.
Onboarding was streamlined to reduce cognitive load during the many steps necessary to set-up a single room. We were constantly looking at different ways that we might be able to remove and automate steps in order to accelerate set-up while keeping the user engaged.
The home screen designed to feel playful and friendly echoing how we wanted the actual home to feel when using Noon’s lighting experience

Vanhawks created the world's first connected bicycle, the Valour. The bike sports its own carbon fibre frame, turn-by-turn signalling, front and rear lights, blind spot sensors and much more.
Developed designs for Vanhawks and user flows for the iOS and Android mobile app. This included a unique on-boarding experience due to the novel aspects of the bike. The on-boarding teaches users about the bike's components, how to update the bike's firmware and how to connect to their bike.
The app talks to the bike and allows for a cyclist to plan and track his/her trips, as well as adjust bike settings (such as the front and rear lights). Slated to be released to the app store in October, 2015.
